Mechanical Design Engineer

The Mechanical Design Engineer is responsible for supporting the Engineering department and other site project teams by providing advice on and creating solutions for installation site issues, and creating conceptual and detailed design models and drawings for both new and existing projects. The will work as part of a team of three reporting into the Drawing Office Manager within the Engineering Department.

Hours of work: 36.25 hours per week within a flexi-time system of 8am-6pm
Status: Full time, Permanent
Salary: Competitive, Dependant on experience

Main tasks will include:

  • Working with various on-site teams to develop projects from concept to completion, including capital investment, project works and plant asset maintenance
  • Developing detailed 3D solid models and drawings for components and assemblies, and converting existing current 2D designs and layouts into 3D CAD technical models
  • Liaising with relevant departments to ensure drawings are correctly followed
  • Supporting project, maintenance and production teams to meet time and budget targets
  • Liaising with suppliers and subcontractors
  • Preparing site reports and other administration tasks
  • Ensuring project compliance with relevant planning, building and health and safety legislation
  • Creation of Bills of Materials
  • Evaluating success of projects during and following completion 

The successful candidate will need:

  • A Degree level or equivalent qualification in a mechanical-based subject
  • In-depth CAD drawing software knowledge, including 2D & 3D formats
  • Strong team working and communication skills
  • A solid understanding of materials, mathematics, science and IT, in relations to design
  • A strong attention to detail
  • The ability to problem solve in a fast-paced environment
  • A self-motivated personality with a hands-on, ‘can do’ approach to work

The ideal candidate would have:

  • Commercial awareness, including experience of working to budgets and strict deadlines
  • Awareness of document control procedures, ideally Autodesk Vault trained
  • Experience in a relevant industry-based role
  • An understanding of CE marking requirements
  • An understanding of the LOLER regulations of lifting equipment
