Production Manager / Department Operations Manager

The Production Manager / Department Operations Manager will lead the Cold Rolling Mills Production department with management for Production Volumes, Operations costs, Quality, Safety and Environmental. You will develop and recommend technological improvements, plans, procedures, and schedules to process efficiently all of our products in accordance with the requirements of our customers. To lead the development of departmental personnel optimising the continuous improvement and technical knowledge of each and every individual.

Production Manager / Department Operations Manager - Duties

  • Develop best practice within the department by establishing standard policies and procedures and mentoring/leading the team
  • Determining and planning optimal utilisation of departmental workers and equipment to maximise output
  • Coordinating corrective actions for any issues within the department that may arise; work with H&S Manager, Sustainability Manager, Quality Manager and other departmental Area Operations Managers in the development and implementation of corrective and preventive actions
  • Identifying and deploying the technical skill sets, resource levels, and systems to deliver projects, including the engagement of external resources as required
  • Develop engineering proposals, capacity specification and costs calculations within the department
  • Coordinate all projects portfolio within the department to analyse the potential return/benefit on undertaking a project
  • Lead Technology and Innovation (T&I) program within the department  

Production Manager / Department Operations Manager - Communication and Reporting 

  • Liaise with the Operations Manager and other managers, supervisors and departments promptly advising on all relevant matters, problems or requirements
  • Produce monthly reports for the Operations Manager on progress against specific objectives and KPIs and agree any corrective action
  • To ensure timely and accurate compliance with all administrative (HR, Purchasing depart etc.) tasks and follow reporting procedures and routines so documentation is forwarded to the relevant parties

Production Manager / Department Operations Manager - General Duties and Responsibilities -

  • Liaising with external bodies, suppliers, subcontractors and internal stakeholders - Corresponding with contractors, and other companies who assist with supporting operations functions
  • Developing and maintaining strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders, ensuring optimal performance

Health and Safety

  •  Ensure ISO 9001, 14001 and OHSAS 18001 controls and procedures are strictly adhered to within departments
  • Work closely with the Health and Safety and environmental Departments to identify recurring problems, agree, initiate and monitor relevant corrective action

Production Manager / Department Operations Manager - Person Specification Qualifications/Experience

  • Educated to degree level BEng or BSc as a minimum in Engineering, Metallurgy or Chemistry/Physics Sciences – MSc or PhD would prove highly beneficial

Experience - Essential

  • A minimum of 7 years’, relevant managerial experience gained within manufacturing environment
  • Previous record of managing successfully engineering and improvement projects within manufacturing industry
  • Experience of managing production teams within tight quality and efficiency targets


  • Previous successful implementation of manufacturing improvement techniques (Lean and Six Sigma) across department
  • Successful records of equipment commissioning


  • 36.25 hours per week with flexitime – company rule specific
