Area Mechanical Maintenance Engineer

The Department/Area Mechanical Maintenance Engineer will work to ensure uninterrupted operation of the assets by reducing unplanned downtime, equipment failures and breakdowns while ensuring all assets are maintained adequately to operate within their designed capabilities. Working a Monday to Friday day shift pattern they will report into the Mechanical Maintenance Manager and have line manager responsibility for the Reliability Engineers and ‘on shift’ maintenance fitters.

Main Tasks & Responsibilities:

  • Coordinating with colleagues in the engineering department to implement site wide maintenance strategy and a strong understanding of Asset Management principals
  • Experience working with Gas fired Furnaces
  • Familiar with Refractory materials, installations and repairs
  • Understanding of safety standards required for working with molten metals
  • Knowledge of the following regulations LOLER, PUWER, COSHH & PSSR
  • Overseeing maintenance or emergency repairs/inspections including Hydraulic, Pneumatic and Mechanical related issues
  • Leading Root Cause Analysis (RCA) studies; implementing corrective actions where necessary
  • Overseeing equipment critical spare parts’ identification and stock maintenance
  • Leading the consolidation of the maintenance budget and forecasting process and developing and presenting maintenance cost reports
  • Working with suppliers and contractors to organise emergency or planned repairs of assets/equipment
  • Assessing area mechanical maintenance supervisor and technicians’ skills; coordinating training where necessary
  • Analysing maintenance engineering data; producing reports, charts, etc. to identify trends
  • Developing Standard Operation Procedures for maintenance tasks/jobs
  • Leading the implementation of maintenance work performance monitoring and key performance indicators (KPIs)
  • Championing the Technology and Innovation (T&I) initiative for project development

Skills Essential to the Role:

  • An Indentured Apprenticeship or Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering – would be willing to study to with company sponsorship
  • A working knowledge of relevant engineering principles and practices demonstrated in a relevant industry in engineering maintenance or reliability fields
  • The ability to accurately compile, interpret and make use of data and other information
  • Experience of Root Cause Analysis, Failure Mode & Effect Analysis tools/techniques
  • The ability to read, understand and interpret technical reports and mechanical/pneumatic/hydraulic drawings and diagrams
  • The ability to establish and maintain close and effective working relationships, within the Department,within the Business and with external suppliers/contractors
  • Good working knowledge of CAD package(s)
  • Basic knowledge of parts fabrication (e.g. machining, welding, turning, etc.) 
  • A positive, ‘can-do’ attitude, integrity, professionalism with a creative and adaptive approach under pressure
