Rolling
Meeting the product requirements of surface quality and engineering properties
Our rolling mills are designed to meet the stringent production requirements of both surface quality and engineering properties.
After casting, our slabs are heated to temperatures exceeding 500°C until they are ready to be processed on our reversing hot mill, where the aluminium is sequentially rolled to a plate thickness about 50 times lower than that of the original slab. Surface cleanliness, free from oxides and other foreign particles, and the material’s dimensions are managed by sophisticated control systems. The hot-rolling process is followed by a 2-stand tandem cold-rolling process, where the metal thickness is further reduced, allowing it to be wound into a coil. This enables the metal to be transported to our two cold rolling mills, where the aluminium is rolled to its final gauge.
On the cold rolling mills, the latest technologies are used to control the flatness and thickness, while ensuring the formation of a clean and bright metal surface. At this stage all coil handling is automated through each of the processing stages until final product packing, using enclosed interim coil storage solutions and autonomous transportation to avoid the risks of damage and contamination.
Certain products require the coils to be batch-annealed in a closely monitored and controlled environment. This thermal treatment allows the metal to achieve optimal mechanical properties and on-press plate performance. For our surface-critical products, the annealing process can take place in an inert atmosphere, ensuring a perfect finish that meets our customers’ requirements.
