Sustainability and Social Responsibility
We actively reduce our impact on the environment by responsibly sourcing energy and minimising our carbon footprint. We also help to fund many local initiatives including trusts, charities and community organisations.
As a result of our ongoing efforts to reduce energy usage per tonne of finished product, we continue to see a year-on-year decline in our consumption. We minimise our carbon footprint and process wastage by casting approximately half of our own aluminium rolling slabs on site and recycling our own aluminium process scrap. To ensure that our whole supply chain reflects our ethics, any bought-in metal is purchased from non-conflict areas. By working with suppliers and contractors who share our commitment to sustainability, we continue to improve our sustainability performance; in 2018, we were able to divert 84.5% of our waste from landfill by working with a carbon positive waste management contractor.
Our strong environmental ethos has been recognised by the likes of Shropshire Wildlife Trust, who awarded us the Shropshire Wildlife Trust, who awarded us the Water Quality Blue Business Award (2015) for our rainwater attenuation system.
Bridgnorth Aluminium Limited goes to great lengths to minimise our impact on the environment, both locally and globally. Over 40% of our energy is sourced from a local anaerobic digestion facility, which significantly reduces our carbon footprint and relieves pressure on landfills. We also practice energy recuperation techniques, using the heat generated from our casting process to warm degreasing chemicals organically.
Supporting our Community
We are committed to providing work and development opportunities for local people. In 2018, we recruited nineteen new starters, including nine apprentices across our Technical and Operations departments. To continuously develop our workforce, we invest in our employees’ personal development, professional training and further education, and employ dedicated training personnel to manage this.
In addition to creating work opportunities, we support our local community by donating widely to charities, trusts and organisations. In 2018, we financially supported over fifteen local causes, including community sporting clubs, community events and local services. We also volunteered staff resource and time to support local schools – delivering assemblies, leading tours of our site, and promoting work experience opportunities – and our regional fire and rescue service. This year, our community efforts gained formal recognition from Shropshire Chamber of Commerce, who presented us with the prestigious ‘Business in the Community’ award.
